DALF C2	Combined reading/writing: 3 hours 30 minutes • Combined listening/speaking: up to 30 minutes after 1 hour of preparation.

DELF/DALF vs. TEF/TCF: Which French Exam Do You Need?

DELF, DALF, TEF, and TCF all assess French, but they are not interchangeable. The right option depends on why you need to prove your French ability.

DELF / DALF

DELF and DALF are diplomas tied to a specific CEFR level. You take an exam for a defined level, from DELF A1 through DALF C2, and demonstrate that you meet the language requirements for that level.

Once you earn a DELF or DALF diploma, it is valid for life, making it useful when you want a permanent credential that confirms your level of French.

TEF / TCF

TEF and TCF are proficiency tests. Rather than earning a diploma at one set CEFR level, you receive scores that reflect your French proficiency at the time you take the test.

These exams are commonly used when you need a current French language score for a specific purpose, including certain Canadian immigration pathways.

The Key Difference

Choose DELF or DALF when you need a permanent diploma proving a specific French level. Choose TEF or TCF when you need a current proficiency score for an application or other specific requirement.
