French can become much harder in high school when lessons move beyond basic vocabulary and students are expected to do more with the language.
Grammar becomes more complex. Reading passages get longer. Writing requires greater accuracy. Oral presentations demand more confidence. Students also need to understand spoken French and express their own ideas instead of relying on memorized phrases.
Gateway Tutoring Academy provides personalized high school French tutoring for students who need extra support with their coursework, want to improve their grades, or simply want French to feel more manageable.
Our tutors work with the material students are learning at school while also strengthening the underlying language skills they need to keep progressing. Tutoring is available for Core French and
French Immersion students, with in-person and
online options.
French Tutoring for School Classes
Our goal is to help high school students build confidence in their French classes and overall abilities.
A student who never became comfortable with verb conjugation may struggle to write a paragraph. Someone with a limited vocabulary may understand grammar but find reading assignments difficult. Another student may do well on written work but freeze when asked to speak in class. That is why our high school French tutoring starts with the student, not a fixed lesson plan.
Students can bring their class notes, homework, readings, assignments, teacher feedback, quizzes, and upcoming test material to tutoring sessions. Their tutor can identify where the difficulty is coming from and spend more time on the areas that need attention.
Lessons can change as school demands change. One week might focus on a difficult grammar unit. The next may involve preparing an oral presentation or reviewing for an upcoming test. The support stays connected to what the student actually needs.

Gateway also provides dedicated tutoring for students enrolled in
AP French and
IB French.
These programs have their own course expectations and assessment demands, so students taking them may benefit from more specialized preparation rather than general high school French tutoring. Gateway's AP French tutoring includes support with reading, listening, writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and AP exam preparation. Its IB French service provides support with coursework, written tasks, oral presentations, listening, reading, mock assessments, and exam review.
Gateway does not use the same French lesson for every student. Tutoring is adapted to the learner's current level, school material, challenges, and goals.
Gateway's French teaching team also includes educators with substantial academic backgrounds in French. We follow a selective hiring process, and our tutors hold at least a bachelor's degree in their respective areas of expertise, with many also being BC-certified teachers.
Our tutors give students something that can be difficult to get during a busy school lesson: enough time to ask questions, work through mistakes, and make sure a concept makes sense before moving on.
